Student Organizations

University Student Assembly

University Student Assembly of the “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” University in Skopje (USA-UKIM) is the largest student organization comprising representatives of the students.

The goal of USC-UKIM is to protect student rights, ensure the quality of student life, improve the study process, and uphold student standards. It advocates for the fulfillment of student rights and interests, contributes to the development of student cultural, social, and intellectual growth, and promotes student activities.

  • The University Student Assembly protects student interests by participating in decision-making through its representatives in the University’s governing bodies, representing students as members of the academic community within higher education.
  • USC-UKIM has the authority to elect student representatives to the University Senate and other University bodies, where students, professors, and other academic community members jointly and equally make decisions.
  • The Assembly proposes the Student Ombudsman to the University Senate and oversees the quality of student life, the study process, and student standards while ensuring the realization of student rights and fostering cultural, social, and intellectual development.
  • USC-UKIM can also propose to governing bodies, such as the Rectorate and Faculty Management, the funding of student activities. Moreover, it encourages extracurricular student initiatives.

The University Student Assembly comprises student representatives selected from those elected to Faculty Student Assemblies.

  • Once student representatives are chosen for the Faculty Student Assembly, two students from each Faculty Assembly are delegated to the university level, becoming members of USC-UKIM.
  • The President of the University Student Assembly is elected from the representatives within USC-UKIM. Their term, as well as the term of other members, lasts one year, with the possibility of re-election for an additional term.
  • Hosting interdisciplinary student conferences.
  • Providing student benefits in various facilities managed by the Ministry of Culture.
  • Organizing workshops and panel discussions for intellectual development.
  • Distributing free tickets to cultural events.
  • Implementing programs and activities at the Student Cultural Center.
  • Implementing programs and activities at the Student Cultural Center.
  • Promoting the development of scientific awareness among students through public calls for scientific or professional projects.
  • Establishing cooperation with diplomatic missions and international organizations to host events under their patronage or support.
  • Collaborating with domestic non-governmental organizations.
  • Organizing cultural and sports activities.
  • Actively participating in the university’s digitalization processes that impact students.
  • Enhancing communication among faculty student assemblies to create a network of UKIM students.

Medical Students’ Society – MSS

The Medical Students’ Society MSS is a voluntary, non-profit, non-governmental society of medical students. It’s established with the free will of students for the purpose of realization, protection and reconciliation of their interests and beliefs in order to improve the status of medical students in the civil society and medical profession, as well as carrying out activities for raising the public’s awareness, strengthening volunteering and enhancing the possibilities for networking of medical students.

The main objectives and tasks of the Medical Students’ Society MSS are:

  • Dissemination of knowledge and transfer of experiences related to medical sciences;
  • Raising public awareness and education of general population on current topics in the society, and related to the medical sciences studied by students;
  • Representing the interests of medical students in front of the faculties of medicine and medical sciences, the institutions and the general population in the country;
  • Taking an active part in creating student related policies;
  • Protection and promotion of the rights and status of students of medicine and medical sciences;
  • Providing assistance in the realization of the rights of every student in their studies arising from laws, statutes of universities and other regulations covering studies of medical students;
  • Strengthening volunteering and social responsibility in order to reduce discrimination among students of different social status, different ethnic and national background, while encouraging them to work together.

The work of the society is coordinated and supervised by the Executive Board, while the activities and projects are carried out by the Public Health Board, the Medical Education Board, the Student Rights and Policies Board and the Board of International Cooperation.

Student Ombudsman

The Student Ombudsman at Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje is a sui generis role within the academic community, established under the Law on Higher Education (Official Gazette of the Republic of Macedonia No. 82/2018). According to the law, every university elects a Student Ombudsman from among regular students to: Address issues arising from academic relations. Protect student rights as established by law and the University’s statutes.

The University Senate of UKIM, at the session held on November 28, 2023, adopted a Decision to appoint a Student Ombudsman at the “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” University in Skopje.

Savche Gjoseva, a student at the Blaže Koneski Faculty of Philology, as the Student Ombudsman for a two-year term.

Responsibilities of the Student Ombudsman:

  • Mediate disputes between students and University bodies or between students and members of the academic community.
  • Provide recommendations in specific cases to resolve disputes.
  • Take independent action when necessary, provided the affected student consents.
  • Publicly discuss issues related to the system for protecting student rights and promote conclusions to enhance the quality of higher education.
  • Collaborate with domestic and international governmental and non-governmental institutions.
  • Perform additional duties assigned by the University Senate or the University Student Assembly.

 

The Student Ombudsman operates under the principles of impartiality, non-discrimination, confidentiality, accessibility, accountability, transparency, and legality.
The Ombudsman cannot represent students before other state bodies and does not have the authority to protect student rights outside the academic community.
The Student Ombudsman submits an annual report to the University Senate.

The procedure begins with a request sent via regular mail, directly to the Ombudsman’s office, or electronically at studentski.pravobranitel.ukim@gmail.com.

The request must include personal information of the submitter (name, surname, study program/unit, student index number, email), circumstances, facts, and evidence supporting the request, and the name of the body or individual concerned.
